AI SEO, AEO, and GEO: What the Terms Actually Mean

A plain-English explanation of AI SEO, answer engine optimization, and generative engine optimization, based on current platform guidance rather than invented ranking tricks.

AI SEO, AEO, and GEO describe overlapping efforts to make information easier for search engines and AI answer systems to discover, understand, trust, and use. The labels are less important than the underlying work.

What Google actually says

Google says its existing SEO best practices remain relevant for AI Overviews and AI Mode. A page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet. Google also says there is no additional AI-only technical requirement, special schema, or machine-readable AI file needed for inclusion.

What matters regardless of the acronym

  • Important information is crawlable, indexable, and present in HTML text.
  • The company, founder, services, customers, and service area are described consistently.
  • Pages answer real customer questions directly and accurately.
  • Claims are supported by useful detail, examples, primary sources, or credible independent context.
  • Structured data matches what a visitor can actually see.
  • Content is updated when facts, platform rules, or services change.
